Following an excellent season in 2009, the ferry companies to Corsica are opening sales for the 2010 season from November 2009.With the number of crossings remaining stable between 2008 and 2009, the Port of Nice has maintained its service frequency, and stabilised its market share in relation to the ports of Toulon and Marseilles.
From May to September 2009, the ‘isle of beauty’ attracted a record number of tourists: more than 5 million air and ferry passengers, an increase of 6.8% on the same period in 2008.
Against current global trends, with the tourist industry affected by the economic crisis, Corsica has become a safe haven. The island is appealing to more and more holiday makers, thanks to its unspoilt beauty, not overrun by large resorts and hotels, and its geographical position, which make it “the closest remote island”.
The hotels and restaurants around the port make Nice a particularly attractive starting point for a ferry crossing to Corsica. Local businesses benefit from increased custom: a vehicle embarking from Nice to Corsica spends on average € 32 on food and drink*. Signs on the port, as well as a leaflet distributed to all vehicles on arrival, encourage passengers to visit local businesses and sights during the waiting time before embarkment, offering an enjoyable way spend a few hours in Nice as part of the holiday.
The 2 ferry companies, Corsica Ferries and SNCM, are currently offering many attractive fares for the 2010 season, and judging by the number of bookings already made, Corsica will be a destination in demand.
