Partnership Projects

The ports are involved in several French and large scale European partnerships.

The French Riviera Ports Authority is positioned as either a partner or leader of partner projects co-financed by the European programmes of European Territorial Cooperation (MARITTIMO, MED, ALCOTRA, Espace Alpin, Interreg Europe and IEV), programmes run by the executive agency of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-TEA), HORIZON 2020 and structural funds (FEAMP and FESI).

As part of its mission of economic development of the French Riviera, the French Riviera Chamber of Commerce has put in place a Public and European Financing Cell. Find out about its aims :

  • MERMAID – Environmental monitoring in urban ports

The French Riviera Ports Authority has carried out a large scale cooperation project, called MERMAID, which was finalised in May 2015. Its aim was to study the practical aspects of monitoring of environmental impact in urban ports within the scope of the European cooperation programme INTERREG MED 2007-2013.

The objective was achieved with the aid of different partners: the port authority of Ancona (Italy), the port authority of Heraklion (Crete), the institute for port study and  cooperation FEPORTS of Valencia (Spain), as well as the Mediterranean Sea (France) Competitivity Cluster.

This project allowed more than 80 ports to be studied and for 6 of them to be visited.

This resulted in the production of :

  • A data base of environmental indicators studied in the ports
  • A data base of technological solutions
  • A recommendations guide for port authorities on the establishment of environmental monitoring
  • A summary of works and recommendations for the next MED programme

The finalisation of the MERMAID project and the visit of the port of Nice were recognised by the Minister for the Environment, Sustainable Development and Energy as an event for the European Week for Sustainable Development.

The project also contributed to the monitoring project of the Port of Nice, resulting in the identification of the best practices of environmental monitoring. The monitoring of the Port of Nice, which is under development, currently includes noise and weather values and is in the testing phase for measuring air quality.

And about the COM&CAP project (transverse project in charge of the communication and capitalization of the MED project of the “Maritime Call”) and its conclusions :

2)       Challenges for Med Ports: Accessibility and Sustainable Maritime Transport

3)       Midterm Conference - Integrated Maritime Economies

Providing an infrastructure to support the development of fishing

The project was studied and updated in cooperation with the Fishermen’s Association of the Port of Golfe Juan. In line with the philosophy of the European Union Blue Growth Plan and the strategic national Plan that follows from it, the French Riviera Chamber of Commerce has set up an structure to support the development of professional fishing, by allowing it to be carried out an with appropriate framework. The operation is financed by the French Riviera Chamber of Commerce, the PACA regional authority, the Alpes Maritimes departmental authority and the European Fishing Fund.

  • Port Observatory

The French Riviera Ports Authority set up a Port Observatory in 2014, which surveys the economic activities of the Ports of the Alpes Maritimes and Monaco : pleasure sailing, yachting, cruising, maritime transport, repair and refit, fishing.

The Port Observatory was established in collaboration with local government authorities,  port authorities and the operators of the 41 port sites. It provides shared and detailed knowledge of the port sector, its components and its characteristics, with an evaluation of its economic weight. The presentation of its information in the form of geographical chart analyses and thematic studies allow an explicit and detailed overview, by navigational zone and sector of activity.

More than just a tool, this observatory is an approach which facilitates the circulation and exchange of information of general interest, enabling an explanation of the vital importance of the port economy.

  • Expansion of the Port Observatory with the BlueConnect project

Logo Interreg

The BlueConnect project, whose aim is to connect very small and medium sized enterprises to the strong potential maritime markets with strong potential, has recently been adopted by the INTERREG France-Italie MARITTIMO program.

This project associates :
- the Pôle Mer Méditerranée, as leader

- the French Riviera Chamber of Commerce, who coordinates the Port Observation of the 6 cross- border territories

- the Chambers of Commerce of the Var, Haute Corse and Sassari, as well as the port authorities of La Spezia and Livorno

Three sectors of port activities with high potential are targeted; pleasure boating, professional yachting, the cruise and ferry sectors, as well as maritime logistics.

BlueConnect will commence in January 2017 for a period of 24 months.

  • Patronage for the rehabilitation of the Darse de Villefranche sur Mer

An ambitious programme of heritage rehabilitation has been carried out on the port of Villefranche Darse in order to restore and reconstruct the 17th century buildings. The “old forges of Villefranche Darse”, partially destroyed in 1944, were totally renovated in 2014, allowing the setup of a nautical trades education institute.

This operation, which combines the restoration of a building protected by the “Batiments de France”, and a relaunch of the economic centre for repair and refit work, was carried out in partnership with the Heritage Foundation, the Total Foundation, the Credit  Agricole Foundations, the Conseil Departemental, who is the owner of the port, and the  Services of the Culture Ministry of Culture.

  • Cruise Club

The aim of the French Riviera Cruise Club is to unite all the stakeholders of the destination ‘Côte d’Azur’, and to be the key interlocutor for the cruise companies and their clients. It is also to educate the local decision makers on the major economic benefits generated by the cruise industry.

  • Innovative products as a result of research

The Port of Golfe Juan has carried out a particularly innovative and environmentally-friendly dredging project : the treatment of sediments by the spreading of bacteria, with the cooperation of researchers from the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis and from the Alpes Maritime Department.

This biological treatment, which reproduces a natural process of biodegradation of organic matter and pollutants by bacteria, reduces up to 90% of the organic matter contained in the sediments, thereby reducing the height of the sediments by the same amount.

This dredging was carried out in the port during May 2015.
